For more than a hundred years, the Brooklyn Bridge has stood as an iconic symbol of New York City. Since opening in 1883, this suspension bridge spanning the East River became the first-ever roadway link between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Today, it serves vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists every day of the year—whether for daily travel or enjoying breathtaking views of the city.
The bridge has grown into a cultural landmark and frequently appears in films shot across New York. It remains both a crucial transport route for locals and a major attraction for tourists. Each day, over 100,000 people cross the bridge, many pausing to take in sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline. While most pedestrians take about half an hour to cross, the scenic pathway often invites a longer stay. With its striking architecture and lively vendors offering unique goods, a visit to the Brooklyn Bridge promises a memorable experience.

What makes the Brooklyn Bridge special?

Its debut symbolized a milestone of American technological prowess set against the nation’s most vibrant city. The bridge’s innovative structure and timeless elegance have inspired generations of architects, engineers, and artists. Crossing it remains one of NYC’s most beloved activities. If you enter from Pier 15 in the Seaport District, you can watch boats pass below this historic structure. As you step onto the elevated walkway, you’ll find vendors offering snacks and souvenirs.
From the bridge, you can admire both its architectural grandeur and the impressive skyline of Lower Manhattan. Be mindful of cyclists and joggers sharing the path as you take photos. On the Brooklyn side, scenic parks, playgrounds, and picnic spots offer a perfect place to relax before heading back.

A short history

Before construction started in 1869, Manhattan and Brooklyn were independent cities. Designed by German-American engineer John A. Roebling, the project was carried out by his son Washington and daughter-in-law Emily. When finished, the 1,595-foot span was the world’s longest suspension bridge.
A marvel of engineering, it was the first to use steel-wire cables and featured a spacious promenade above the traffic lanes. The deck—hung from four interlaced cables—accommodated both vehicles and pedestrians crossing the East River. Its majestic Gothic-style towers added to its visual appeal and amazed all who saw them. Emily Roebling was the first to cross the completed bridge, and President Chester A. Arthur attended its opening ceremony.

Good to know

Some of the coolest neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Manhattan lie near the bridge. On the Brooklyn end, check out stylish Brooklyn Heights or Dumbo for great dining. Stroll along the Brooklyn Heights Promenade or unwind at Brooklyn Bridge Park for excellent photo opportunities. Back in Manhattan, lively Chinatown and chic Tribeca are only a short walk away.
To access the bridge from Manhattan, take the 4, 5, or 6 train to Brooklyn Bridge–City Hall. From Brooklyn, enter near Washington Street and Prospect Street by Cadman Plaza via the A or C train to High Street–Brooklyn Bridge, or the 2 or 3 to Clark Street.
