For anyone planning a visit to New York City, seeing the Statue of Liberty is often an essential part of the trip. This world-famous monument was presented to the United States by France and has long represented freedom and hope for generations of immigrants arriving in America.

Although many people recognize its familiar silhouette, there are plenty of fascinating details about the statue that remain less widely known. Learning about its history, design, and symbolism can make a visit to this celebrated American landmark even more meaningful.

She Has More Than One Name

Although most people call her the Statue of Liberty or Lady Liberty, her official name is Liberty Enlightening the World. French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the monument, which was formally dedicated in 1886. In 1924, it received designation as a National Monument.

Regardless of which name people use, the statue remains an enduring national treasure and a powerful representation of American ideals.

She Has Undergone Major Restoration

Even an iconic monument needs maintenance over time. During the mid-1980s, the Statue of Liberty underwent a major restoration project. One of the most significant improvements involved replacing the original torch, which had deteriorated too severely to be repaired.

On July 5, 1986, a centennial celebration marked Lady Liberty's official return following the extensive renovation. The project helped preserve the monument for future generations.

The Eiffel Tower’s Engineer Helped Create Her Structure

To support the large copper plates that form the statue's exterior, Bartholdi sought assistance from Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, the engineer renowned for designing the Eiffel Tower. Eiffel developed an internal framework using iron and steel, providing the essential structure beneath the statue's copper surface.

Unlike a conventional solid sculpture, this innovative design allows the outer copper covering to move slightly in response to wind, changing temperatures, and other environmental conditions. This flexibility helps reduce the strain that could otherwise cause damage over time.

A central supporting structure connects to the exterior through a network of iron supports, keeping the monument stable while allowing limited movement. The engineering principles behind this framework helped the statue withstand changing weather conditions and remain standing for well over a century.

Thanks to this carefully planned construction, the Statue of Liberty continues to rise above New York Harbor as a lasting symbol of freedom and democracy.

The Weather Was Unpleasant on Inauguration Day

The statue's official dedication took place on October 28, 1886, accompanied by a parade in New York City. Unfortunately, the weather was poor, and heavy rain forced organizers to postpone the planned fireworks until November 1.

Despite the conditions, the ceremony went ahead. President Grover Cleveland accepted the monument on behalf of the United States, praising it as a magnificent and impressive work of art.

She Represents the Roman Goddess Libertas

The Statue of Liberty depicts Libertas, the Roman goddess who personifies freedom. In traditional representations, Libertas often carries a torch and a tablet known as a tabula ansata. The tablet associated with the statue bears the date of the American Declaration of Independence.

Bartholdi drew inspiration from the reverence for liberty he witnessed during the French Revolution. During his visits to the United States, he also observed how deeply Americans valued the idea of freedom. These shared ideals inspired him to create a monument celebrating liberty and democracy across national boundaries.

Presented by the people of France to the people of the United States, the statue became an internationally recognized emblem of hope. Its message continues to resonate with people who believe in freedom and equal dignity.

The Seven Spikes of Her Crown Have a Global Meaning

One of the statue's most distinctive features is its crown, which is decorated with seven spikes. These are commonly understood to represent the seven seas and seven continents, expressing the idea that liberty extends throughout the world.

The torch held high above the statue represents enlightenment, reinforcing the monument's message of freedom and knowledge. Together, the crown and torch communicate a vision of liberty that reaches beyond borders and belongs to people everywhere.

These symbolic details help explain why the Statue of Liberty remains one of the world's most recognizable monuments.

The Island Was Not Always Called Liberty Island

The Statue of Liberty stands on an island in New York Harbor that is now known as Liberty Island. Before receiving its current name, the island was called Bedloe's Island.

Its name changed in 1956, reflecting its close association with the monument and its importance as a symbol of American freedom. Today, Liberty Island is an essential destination for visitors hoping to experience the statue up close and learn more about its history.

You Can Reach the Statue by Ferry

Visitors can travel to the Statue of Liberty by ferry from Battery Park in Manhattan or Liberty State Park in New Jersey. The crossing takes approximately 15 minutes and offers views of both the Statue of Liberty and nearby Ellis Island.

After arriving at Liberty Island, visitors can explore the grounds, visit the pedestal, and discover exhibits at the Statue of Liberty Museum. These experiences provide opportunities to appreciate the monument's craftsmanship, historical significance, and cultural influence.

When planning a visit, make sure to obtain ferry tickets through the official authorized provider for the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island. Be cautious of street vendors claiming to sell legitimate tickets.

Experience Lady Liberty in Person

Now that you know more about the Statue of Liberty's background, engineering, and symbolism, you can appreciate the monument on a deeper level. Taking a ferry to Liberty Island allows you to admire its remarkable construction and see the details that photographs cannot fully capture.

More than a celebrated attraction, Lady Liberty remains a lasting reminder of freedom, hope, and the enduring connection between nations and people.
