Camels are extraordinary creatures perfectly adapted to thrive in the harsh conditions of desert environments. With a variety of unique features, they can endure extreme temperatures and scarce resources, making them the ultimate survivors of arid landscapes.

Camel Family Ties

Belonging to the camelid family, camels are closely related to llamas, alpacas, guanacos, and vicuñas, all of which are native to South America. Today, there are three species of camels, most of which are domesticated. The one-humped dromedary (Camelus dromedarius) roams the dry regions of Africa and Asia, including the Sahara Desert and the Middle East. The domestic Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus) is found across Central Asia, while the wild Bactrian camel (Camelus ferus), critically endangered, inhabits remote areas of Mongolia and China. Unlike dromedaries, Bactrian camels have two humps.

The Function of Humps

While many associate camels’ humps with their ability to go long periods without water, it’s a common misconception that they store water there. In reality, these humps are composed of fat, which serves as an energy reserve when food and water are scarce. Camels inhabit areas with limited vegetation and water, making this fat storage crucial for their survival.
To conserve water, camels have also developed several physiological adaptations. For instance, their urine is thick and concentrated, and their feces are so dry that they can even be used as fire starters. Additionally, camels possess a unique nasal structure that allows them to reabsorb moisture from the air they exhale, minimizing water loss with each breath.
Remarkably, camels can survive the loss of up to 30% of their body weight in water—far more than most mammals can endure. However, they cannot go indefinitely without drinking. When they do have access to water, camels can quickly consume large quantities, replenishing their hydration without storing it for later use.

Thriving in Extreme Temperatures

Camels are uniquely equipped to handle both extreme heat and cold. Their body fat, primarily stored in their humps, aids in thermoregulation, allowing them to release excess heat during hot weather. Unlike many mammals, camels rarely sweat, and their body temperature naturally fluctuates with the environment—rising during the day and cooling at night. Their thick fur, surprisingly, acts as insulation against both heat and cold, helping them maintain a stable body temperature.
To protect their bodies from the scorching desert sand, camels have leathery, heat-resistant pads on their feet, knees, elbows, and sternum. This adaptation allows them to lie down comfortably without burning themselves. Additionally, their lack of a stifle fold—a skin fold that limits airflow under the body—enables air circulation when they rest, further keeping them cool.
While often associated with hot climates, some camels, like the Bactrian, endure freezing winters and sweltering summers. Their thick fur keeps them warm in cold weather and sheds quickly as temperatures rise, demonstrating their remarkable adaptability.

Walking on Sand with Ease

Camels are built to traverse soft, sandy terrain without sinking. Weighing up to 1,000 kilograms, they possess wide, snowshoe-like feet with two toes that distribute their weight effectively, preventing them from sinking into the sand.
