When snow covers the landscape, some destinations transform into breathtaking winter retreats. The perfect winter escape is often found in a charming town where beautiful scenery, local culture, outdoor adventures, and relaxing experiences come together to refresh the body and mind.

1. Queenstown, New Zealand

Queenstown is widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s most beloved travel destinations, thanks to its spectacular landscapes, endless activities, and welcoming atmosphere. Located in Otago on the southwestern side of New Zealand’s South Island, this beautiful resort town sits beside the crystal-clear waters of Lake Wakatipu and is surrounded by impressive mountain ranges, including Walter Peak and The Remarkables.

The area’s dramatic natural scenery and vibrant atmosphere make it an ideal destination for travelers seeking adventure, outdoor exploration, or a peaceful winter escape surrounded by nature.

2. Štramberk, Czech Republic

Štramberk is a charming historic town built along the slopes of a forest-covered limestone hill. The town is dominated by the medieval Trúba castle tower, which has stood above the landscape for centuries and remains its most recognizable landmark.

Located in the Štramberk Highlands of the Moravian-Silesian region, the town is famous for its traditional wooden houses dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. These timber buildings create a cozy atmosphere during the cold season. Nearby, the Šipka Cave, recognized as a national monument, adds further historical and natural appeal to the area.

3. Shirakawa-go, Japan

Hidden at the foot of Mount Haku-san in Gifu Prefecture, Shirakawa-go is a peaceful mountain village known for its traditional Japanese architecture. The village is especially famous for its gasshō-zukuri farmhouses, which feature steep thatched roofs designed to withstand some of the heaviest snowfall in Japan.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Shirakawa-go features beautiful rice fields, flowing rivers, and a traditional rural atmosphere. The village has also gained international attention through the Japanese visual novel series Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and its anime adaptation.

4. Damüls, Austria

Damüls is famous for receiving extraordinary amounts of snowfall, with an average annual accumulation of around 9.3 meters. Because of this impressive winter climate, the village earned the title of the “World’s Snowiest Town” in 2006.

Home to only about 300 residents, Damüls has become a favorite winter destination for skiing and snow sports enthusiasts. Located in Bregenz, Vorarlberg, in western Austria, the village sits at an elevation of 1,430 meters and offers excellent skiing conditions along with traditional Alpine hospitality. Its surrounding mountains and untouched natural scenery attract visitors from around the world.

5. Funes, Italy

The Val di Funes, also known as Villnöss Valley, is one of Italy’s most scenic mountain destinations. Located in South Tyrol, this peaceful valley is famous for the dramatic Odle/Geisler Dolomites, where pale rock towers and sharp mountain peaks create an unforgettable backdrop.

With numerous hiking paths winding through breathtaking landscapes, Funes is a paradise for mountain lovers. The valley is also part of the “Pearls of the Alps,” a group of communities committed to sustainable tourism, environmental protection, and preserving traditional customs.

6. Zermatt, Switzerland

Zermatt is a small Alpine village in Switzerland’s Valais region with a population of around 6,000 people. Located at the base of the legendary Matterhorn, one of the world’s most recognizable mountains, the village has become closely associated with this iconic peak.

As a car-free destination at an altitude of 1,608 meters, Zermatt offers a peaceful mountain atmosphere and is considered one of Europe’s finest ski resorts. Its combination of breathtaking scenery, luxury accommodations, and world-class winter sports makes it a favorite among visitors from around the globe.

7. Breckenridge, Colorado

Located in the Tenmile Range of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, Breckenridge is a charming historic town surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery. The small buildings and traditional streets of this former mining town become especially beautiful when covered in snow.

Visitors can climb into the surrounding peaks to enjoy panoramic views overlooking the town and valleys below.
